23 September–23 October

Leaves are falling and the air is cooling. Autumn has arrived, and we are entering the second half of the Zodiac. Individuals born during this month are born under the sign of Libra – but Libran nature is not only expressed by people born with their Sun in Libra, as it also manifests in anyone that has planets or angles in this sign. Thus, people that may not be Libra could act very much like Libra and vice versa, depending on how many planets they have in this Zodiacal position. The constellation of Libra in the sky shows the symbol of the scales. Our ancestors realised that Libra was an invaluable marker of a highly significant cyclical point in our cosmic clock: the fall equinox. This is the time of year when day and night are equally long and, hence, equally balanced. In nature, autumn boasts magnificent tableaus of landscapes. It’s a time of outstanding beauty that brings forth bursts of colour before the onset of winter. This is why Libra is associated not only with balance and harmony, but also with all things beautiful.

Accordingly, the most outstanding characteristic of Libra is the need for beauty and harmony. Graceful, kind and well-mannered, Libra generally dislikes gaudy and crude behaviour. As the most social of all Zodiac signs, it excels at the art of getting along. Fair play and compromise are primary concerns, and social politics – such as networking, working alongside others and taking the lead on issues of justice and fair play – are sought after. Social injustice can actually cause Libra emotional pain. The ability to see another’s point of view makes Librans ideal for work in careers like law, arbitration, marriage guidance and counselling.

Very sociable and gregarious, this sign is not happy without an intimate relationship. Libra tends to be romantic – a lover, not a fighter. Always looking for the perfect union, it may try to elevate the other to some idealised state. The dream is more important than the actual situation, and seeing the grim reality with its unpleasantness feels heavy and depressing. Hence, Libra may cover up problems, keeping things light and airy.

Consideration for others can often result in over-compromising and having no clear idea of what Libra personally desires. As Libra dislikes conflict big time, it is capable of going to great lengths to find agreement and avoid arguments (quarrels can, in fact, cause it physical symptoms). It will persuade or reason with others to find compromise. If this is not possible, it will simply remove itself from the difficult situation. Having said that, if Libra’s peaceful nature is taken advantage of, it will bite back at some point to re-establish balance.

Decisiveness is not Libra’s forte. The ability to see the many differing viewpoints of any issue – and the desire to avoid upsetting others – makes choosing a direction very challenging. This is what gives this sign the bad reputation of sitting on the fence and even of being insincere. Once it has decided to end an unwanted association, it may manipulate the situation so the other leaves, rather than acting more directly.

Libra does greatly enjoy the comfortable life and the beaux-arts. The sign itself does not indicate artistic ability, but most certainly the appreciation of it. Clothes, trinkets and art need to be stylishly understated with elegance and great design. Loud and glitzy opulence is generally a big no, as is overly dramatic, emotional and confrontational art.

Difficultly expressed, Librans can be superficial and have strong hedonistic tendencies. They may over-emphasise their dependency on others and seek relationships for purely personal gain. Depending on the rest of their chart, they can also be confrontational and argumentative – of course, only in the name of fairness and to keep the peace.

Nonetheless, Libra, more than any other sign, has the ability to put others at their ease. One of its greatest gifts is to recognise other people’s abilities and talents and to promote these. Libra is the perfect social organiser, blending different personalities and mediating between opposing factions – the born peacemaker and matchmaker. At its finest, Libra is completely impartial, with a strong allegiance to society as a whole, inspiring the capabilities of others with its gentle charm, grace and kindness.
